The Ibar valley connects Serbia, the Sandschak and Montenegro. Raška is an important center of Serbian history. Milisav Savić has documented this area with his book "Midnight train to Raška", talking about life in small Serbian towns and studying their nature. The live of farmers and factory workers, far away from the splendid center Belgrad, the relations between them and the changing times from the end of world war 2 through communist time is the theme of this book.

In the 60ies and 70ies many people went to Germany, Austria or other countries to work there. Many came back, and from their savings they build homes which are easily to distinguish from the traditional style of their neighbors. They resemble small castles, with lions or other figures, nice gardens and decorated fences, showing the success of their owners.
