Sveti Sava, the cathedral of Saint Sava, was planned in the 1920ies. The construction began 1935, was stopped in 1941 and continued in 1985. The outside was finished in 2004, the interior is still under construction. It would have been the largest orthodox church in the world, but now there is a larger one in Moscow.

Saint Sava (1175 - 1235) was the son of Despot Stefan Nemanja. He preferred to life in a monastery instead becoming a leader of the Serbs. His father followed him in 1197 and they founded the Hilandar monastery. Hilandar became the spiritual center of Serbian Orthodoxism. When his father died, Sava left the monastery to install peace between his brothers Vukan and Stefan. Later he became patriarch of Nikea. His writings are the first Serbian legal system and the start of Serbian literature.
