New Belgrade has been build on the left side of the Sava after the Second world war. It is a typical construction where many apartments - with superior standards at that time - had to build fast (and cheap).

In the last war the government sold the apartments to raise money - "they made everyone a capitalist" as the people here say.
New Belgrade is build up in squares, and each square has a number and is called a "block". New Belgrade is the last country that is not "block free" people say. (In Tito's time, Yugoslavia was one of the leaders of the "block free countries".

While the houses are in desperate need for renovation, they are - compared to similar housing facilities in France or else - relatively clean. People care for what they own.
