Serbs are happy people, who like to go out, sit in restaurants and enjoy themselves. It is possible to go to a bar and spend hours while buying one single drink. The waiter is happy that you came and does not push for more if you do not want - or cannot afford it.
Life happens at different times then somewhere else. Lunch is somewhere between 11 and five. Dinner between six and eleven in the evening. Good meals consist of lot of meat, in in the river areas also fish, less potatoes, rice or noodles but lots of cucumber and tomato salad. Very important are also the starters: cheese, paprika, ham, beans and ajvar (grinded and cooked paprika).

National dish is Pleskavica, the very much improved version of a hamburger. Ground pork meat is grilled and all kinds of toppings from onions, garlic, paprika and else is added, all packed on a fresh bun in various tasty types. The big Mac is the poor brother: after a Pleskavica you are sure that you have eaten something! Also see here |

Brandy, means Rakija, is part of every Serbian meal.

Rakija is made from many fruits and in several variations: Kajsir (Apricot),
Slivovic (prune) or Viliamovka (pear).
Some people say that a typical breakfast consists of coffee, cigarette and rakija. More important is that rakija is in most cases home made, in a kind of party together with family and friends, and this is why he has this important place in the live of the society. |
And for the real atmosphere, music is added.
Most of the times music is played by Gypsies, and they also sing. The traditional songs are full of love, the hard live, the good times and the feelings. Another sort is a mix of Turkish and Austrian music, played at weddings and outdoors. It blends Serbian improvisation, noise and cacophonic elements. But the international festival in Guca, the Woodstock of traditional Serbian music, attracts now 500 000 visitors of which many are foreigners. |
